Within the Pioneers Community Development unit, each Pioneers class plans, develops, facilitates and evaluates projects to meet community needs identified by that class. In the process, students, school staff, and local community members learn to work together for the improvement of the community.
Past projects have included community meetings to educate local citizens on the effects of drought and impact on local water supplies, tutoring and mentoring programs for elementary students, a seminar on the health concerns and financial hardships of teen pregnancy, and removing community blight by painting over graffiti in public spaces.
“Pioneers has helped me to get more involved in the community by showing me the multiple opportunities everywhere I could take to possibly take action in to help benefit the community areas in need.”
“Pioneers has shown me that taking care of your community and helping others doesn't just benefit other people, it benefits you as well and helps your community become a better place.”
